Simply put, wow…Apache has intense dark red glossy leaves, oval with frizzy edges, growing in a loose rosette – this is a true showstopper.  Flavour wise the hearts are crisp & almost sweet whilst the surrounding leaves have a more savoury taste: this double dose of flavour makes Apache very desirable.  Plus you can choose to grow heads or cut-&-come-again if you are in a hurry, and sowing is possible from spring to early winter!

Did you know that lettuces do not like germinating in hot weather?  Hot weather sends the seeds to sleep (its called seed dormancy), so store your lettuce seed in a cool place then when you are ready for starting find a shady spot to sow them and cool the soil or compost…soak it with water and repeat for 2-3 days before sowing.  Transplant your lettuce seedlings to shadier parts of the garden (morning sun if fine, it is the hottest afternoon sunshine that they need shading from: you can plant your lettuces in the shade of much taller plants, like tomatoes, corn, and squash or amongst your borders.

Autumn sowing for spring salads  (75 seeds)

Arctic King is as hardy as its name suggests so you can autumn sow and enjoy tasty light green crinkled leaves for fresh green salads in late winter and hearted butterheads from early spring.  Very hardy, it is only in the coldest areas you may need cloches.  You can also grow in a cold greenhouse or coldframe, in milder areas you may be able to enjoy from January!.

SOW: from February through to October.  Sowing a little seed every 2-3 weeks will give you a succession of lettuces.  They can be started in modules and transplanted or sown in situ.  Autumn sowings can be grown through the winter under cover.

Bronze Guard is a wonderful oakleaf variety with rich bronze tinged, green leaves.  The flavour is more complex and contrasts well with the sweeter varieties, bridging the gap between lettuce and the sharpness of rocket.  As you can easily pick the outer leaves (it will just keep growing) you could use it as a garnish but let it sing in a mixed salad or use it to compliment the natural sweetness of tomatoes and enjoy the distinctive flavour.    Price for 75 seeds

SOW: a little seed 15mm deep every 2-3 weeks from spring to summer.   You can start them in modules and transplant so that there is no need to thin. 

GROW: simply plant out each little clump from your module spacing them out at 15-20cm. As they grow you can pick off the outer leaves and Bronze Guard will just keep growing.  As the plants age the flavour, as with all lettuces, changes so when that happens simply replace with a fresh young batch from a more recent sowing.  In this way you will have a steady supply over many weeks.

EAT: serve up with tomatoes, perk up cucumbers or let it shine in a mixed salad.  Mix with parsley and rocket for a more piquant garnish.
