Red Velvet has gorgeous frilly and ruffled loose leaves, a beautiful reddish maroon with tinges of green, and a lovely crispy crunch to accompany their rich mild flavour. This is a lettuce that partners up with flavours such as grated cheese, fresh or dried fruit, nuts or crispy bacon pieces. Red Velvet is also happy to be treated as a cut-&-come-again for repeat picking.
Price for 75 seeds
Cut-&-come-again… and get more than one crop from your Red Velvet lettuces. Once your young plants reach about 10cm tall simply snip off the leaves you want leaving a little stump (about 2cm long) which will resprout to give you another crop in a few week’s growing time. Often you can get 2 or 3 and sometimes 4 pickings. Combine this with a staggered sowing and you can have a steady supply of fresh leaves over many weeks.
Staggered sowing (or successional sowing) is when you sow a few seeds every 2-3 weeks to help spread out your harvest. With lettuces you can sow a different variety in between and that way your taste buds always have a fresh flavour to look forward to enjoying – perhaps sow a small amount of Red Velvet and follow it up with a green variety before sowing some more Red Velvet… we have so many choices to tempt you!
