This is our favourite mangetout type. It is a very old variety producing flat pods with a very sweet flavour. Be warned, once it starts to crop you will need to pick every day. Stunning rich purple coloured pods set off against bright green plants. You must give these a chance in your garden! The plants are a very easy garden size, 90-120cm tall. First you will see lovely bicoloured flowers and then you will soon be picking the pods. I love them young in salad where they make a glossy impact. These can also be lightly sautéed or stir fried. This is a French Mangetout type with small dark green pods which have an excellent flavour. It grows to 50cm and likes a little support. Keep picking to keep the plants producing. We only have a limited supply of this variety this year. Price for 50 seeds

Growing to 75-120cm this is a variety that needs support. In return it will give you excellent flavoured broad flat mangetout pods that are tender and crisp. Remember to keep picking and it will keep producing. Fabulous, fresh and low food miles – what more can you ask for? Price for 50 seeds

PEA SWEET HORIZON 50 seeds SOW: from March to June. We start our peas 3 per pot to give them a fighting chance against the mice. Sowing in guttering to be slid into place has become popular. They can also be sown in situ. GROW: If pot sown harden off before planting out. Peas like moisture and will tolerate light shade. Water in dry summers. Pick regularly to encourage more growth. Being vigorous, Sweet Horizon will need support. EAT: pick them while still flat, before they begin to swell and loose the sweetness: Sweet Horizon can produce large pods which can be sliced before cooking. We prefer to eat mangetout fresh although you can freeze them very successfully. Be warned, as with other mangetout, once it starts to crop you will need to pick every day – the pods grow overnight and like to hide amongst the foliage!

For plants that grow just 60-70cm tall the crop that you get is impressive both in yield and tenderness.  This British bred variety has an AGM so you know that is a top quality choice.  It also ‘does’ really well on heavy soils.

Onward is the AGM winning main crop cousin to Early Onward, taking about 10 days longer to start cropping. It has plump, blunt ended pods which are produced in pairs and contain large peas with a super flavour. The plant itself can grow to a height of 60-75cm

SOW:  in March to May however sowing in June and July can also give you a successful crop: in mild areas a sowing in July can extend your harvest into October.  We start all our peas in pots (2-3 seeds in each).  You can sow peas in situ but wait until the soil has started to warm up.   Sowing every 4-5 weeks will give you fresh peas over the whole season.

 

GROW: pot sown plants need to be hardened off before planting out.  Space pot clumps 15-20cm apart and individual peas 10cm apart.  Onward grows 60-75cm tall and needs some supporting.  All peas will tolerate light shade & like moisture so water in dry summers.  Pick 2-3 times a week to encourage more growth.

 

EAT: this old-fashioned pea is sweetest when picked and cooked within 30 minutes of harvest, before the sugar has turned to starch.  For marrowfat peas (best for cooking mushy peas) allow the starch to develop more by letting the pods dry a little on the plant before picking, this will also give you a smaller crop.

Petite Provencal is French heirloom variety producing very sweet small petit pois peas and tasty tendrils. They take about 7 weeks from spring sowing to harvest, a little less if you pick them early as a snow pea, they can be overwintered (sown November to February) for early cropping around May. Reaching 40-50cm high they don’t need supporting. 

Sow and overwinter between November and February: avoid sowing during very cold or very wet periods – open ended cloches may be needed protect from extreme cold and rain.

Spring sow from March to June
