Carouby de Maussane is our favourite mangetout type. It is a very old variety producing flat pods with a very sweet flavour. Be warned, once it starts to crop you will need to pick every day. The pods grow overnight and like to hide amongst the foliage! It also has lovely purple mauve flowers. Growing to 75cm it does like support.

SOW: from March to June. We grow ours in pots to give them a fighting chance against the mice. Sowing in guttering to be slid into place has become popular. They can be sown in situ.
GROW: if pot sown harden off before planting out. Peas like moisture and will tolerate light shade. Water during dry summers. Pick regularly to encourage more growth. Growing to 75cm Carouby De Mausanne does like support.
EAT: pick by the time the pods reach 5cm – leave them for longer and they will start to swell and loose the sweetness. We have frozen them, but we prefer to eat them as soon as possible after picking.
