Lettuce Prizehead

In stock

£0.60

Heirloom Prizehead has a history dating back to the 1880’s: you just know that this is a lettuce worthy of a space in your garden.  It has delicious crinkled light green leaves that are flecked and tipped with red-bronze shades. With speedy growth you won’t be waiting long to enjoy it for yourself.   Price for 75 seeds

SOW: starting lettuces off in trays or modules allows you to transplant rather than thin.  Sow a little seed every 2-3 weeks for a succession of lettuces from March to September. Seed depth 10mm but they are not that fussy if a little deeper or shallower!  In the summer sow later in the afternoon as lettuce germination can be erratic in hot weather.

GROW: for a larger size lettuce plant 20-25cm apart, ready in 7 weeks.  You can also grow Prizehead as a cut-and-come-again in a short row, close spaced and cut when about 10cm high.  Each plant will usually resprout to give 2 cuts.  Grown like this the first cut can be taken about 4-5 weeks after sowing.

EAT: delicious & beautiful.  Mix with other leaves for unique home-grown salads.

Lettuce Red Deer Tongue

In stock

£0.75

The long pointed triangular leaves are edged with red, they are slightly crinkled and taste delicious. This heirloom variety is rugged and will produce lovely tender lettuces grown in places other lettuces just will not thrive. Pick individual leaves or harvest whole. Price for 75 seeds

SOW: in spring and summer. For headed lettuces sow in modules to transplant, for cut-&-come-again use sow in situ quite thickly

GROW: for cut-&-come-again you can take your first harvest when the plants are less than 10cm high in about a month from sowing. Red Deer Tongue will resprout for successive cropping. For heads transplant at about 15-20cm apart and cut when they fill their space.

EAT: heirloom flavour at its best. Red Deer Tongue was recorded as grown by pioneers in America: this rugged variety continues to produce lovely tender lettuces grown in places other lettuces just will not thrive.

Lettuce Red Velvet

In stock

£0.75 / pack(s)

Red Velvet has gorgeous frilly and ruffled loose leaves, a beautiful reddish maroon with tinges of green, and a lovely crispy crunch to accompany their rich mild flavour.  This is a lettuce that partners up with flavours such as grated cheese, fresh or dried fruit, nuts or crispy bacon pieces. Red Velvet is also happy to be treated as a cut-&-come-again for repeat picking.

Price for 75 seeds

Cut-&-come-again… and get more than one crop from your Red Velvet lettuces.  Once your young plants reach about 10cm tall simply  snip off the leaves you want leaving a little stump (about 2cm long) which will resprout to give you another crop in a few week’s growing time.  Often you can get 2 or 3 and sometimes 4 pickings.  Combine this with a staggered sowing and you can have a steady supply of fresh leaves over many weeks.

Staggered sowing (or successional sowing) is when you sow a few seeds every 2-3 weeks to help spread out your harvest.  With lettuces you can sow a different variety in between and that way your taste buds always have a fresh flavour to look forward to enjoying – perhaps sow a small amount of Red Velvet and follow it up with a green variety before sowing some more Red Velvet… we have so many choices to tempt you!

Lettuce Tuscan Pesciatina (crisphead)

In stock

£0.75 / pack(s)

Each crisphead of Tuscan Pesciatina is a whole lot of satisfying lettuce! The hearted heads can be green with red edging, ours grew mostly deep red with only a little green showing until sliced.  Wonderful crunchy leaves that are generously sprinkled with bubbles, these help salad dressing to stay on!

Bubbles on the leaves

The bubbly surface of the leaves is a feature of Pesciatina, you may see this phenomenon described as heavily blistered but, I am sure you will agree, bubbles is a much nicer way of describing this growth habit.
