This is a strong growing and well flavoured onion with a beautiful pale bronze skin. Look forward to a good yield of firm, globe shaped bulbs that are also a good choice for storing and using as needed over the winter.

Produces beautiful small button onions, an heirloom variety from Italy that is also known as Cipollini. They are fabulous for grilling, baking whole or braising in a sweet & sour sauce. 60 seeds.

FOR A GIANT ONION

     In December sow under glass in pots.  Sow seed on the surface of the seed compost and lightly cover with a sprinkling of vermiculite or compost, and place at a temperature of 14°C  Prick out and pot on in individual pots whilst keeping them at this temperature.  This early start ensures vigorous seedlings that will be itching to explode into growth the moment they are planted out into rich, fertile soil. Carefully harden off and plant them out once the soil has warmed up in mid to late spring.

     In very mild areas you can sow outside in the autumn and overwinter them, they will need almost the full year to reach their potential size.  This direct sowing means that there is no transplanting shock however you are gambling with the winter weather.

     For big bulbs you will need to leave a wider spacing then you would normally (40cm+).  Full sun and no competition from weeds will also keep your onions happy.

A new must have red onion: attractive deep red skin with a red layer between each white scale.  This is a delicious variety, mild and sweet making it a very good choice for salads (they cook up really well too).  The fat flattened globe shaped bulbs can store for months.

SOW: in spring in modules or in situ (but will need thinning) with seed depth 10mm.  Module sown seeds do not need pricking out unless you sow several seeds in each section. 

 

GROW: space at 15-20cm apart to allow room for the chunky bulbs to reach their potential. They prefer full sun, fertile soil and steady watering as the bulb swells.  You will know that they are ready as the foliage begins to keel over.

 

EAT: this variety, Parma, can be stored for months and months – the sweet & mild flavour matures into more complex tones and increases in pungency as time passes.
