The history behind this variety

Originated from a cross between a kale, brussels sprout and then recrossed

with purple sprouting broccoli. This breeding was found of interest by Charles Darwin and mentioned

in his writings of the Gardeners Chronical of 1860, and his book Animals and Plants under Domestication in 1868.

This is a clump forming perennial with small lilac-purple florets on tall slender stems. It can flower in its first season from an early planting. It is a good plant for encouraging beneficial insects to the veg plot as well as creating an airy height over lower planting in borders. Flowering between July and September. Everlasting?

Easy to dry, cut a bunch and hang upside-down for 4-6 weeks in a shady & airy place.  They retain their colours when dried like this - if left on the plant they dry to a light brown.  They can last dried for several years hence they are known as everlasting, also termed strawflowers or paper daisies.
