Black Single actually has exquisite, deepest purple, silky flowers with yellow throats: in the sun they appear black.  Add even more impact by growing in front of a white wall.  Perfect for the wildlife friendly gardener as Hollyhocks are highly attractive to butterflies and bees.  These flower in the year after sowing, June-August.  Height 150-180cm.    Price for 40 seeds

 

SOW & GROW: start sowing from April to early June, you can sow thinly in a seed bed or into seed trays in a cold frame.  This or prick out to give 5cm spacing (plant up thinings into small individual pots.  Grow on and plant out 30cm apart in their growing positions during September and October.  These plants will flower in the summer the following year

 

ENJOY: the amazing colour might just give you a ‘thing’ for dark flowers! To highlight them still more plant them in front of a light coloured wall. The single flowers are very attractive to bees and butterflies
