Lovely Harp F1 is a particularly good choice for protected sowing & growing in colder weather and areas, with easy picking from the upright plants. Pointy leaves with a gentle serration, smooth and dark green are the features of mature Harp. They can be close spaced for picking young, with more rounded leaves, perfect for popping straight into a salad and for saving garden space. Or choose to grow on as they have great flavour at all stages. This is a year round variety.
Price for 50 seeds
SOW: particularly good choice for colder weather sowing with protection (October to March), in the open and for a steady supply of salad leaves sow from April to September. Seed depth 10-25mm
GROW: in cold weather grow under cloches or glass. Space plants about 15-40cm apart (it depends on how large you want them. Harvest when the leaves reach the size you prefer, we normally start about 6 weeks from planting out. Pick the leaves carefully as the stems and roots are easily damaged, alternatively pull up the whole plant and replace with a later transplant or leave larger gaps between remaining plants.
EAT: traditionally with eggs, become inspired by the ideas below…
- Vegetables… chard, collard, fennel, garlic, ginger, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, spring onions, shallots, and sorrel.
- Fruit… apples, lemon, quince, and tomato (yay, at last another use for quince apart from jelly)
- Spicy flavours… cayenne, cumin, curry, mustard seeds, nutmeg, paprika, ground pepper, saffron, and salt
- Herbs… home-grown of course…basil, chives, dill, lovage, marjoram, mint, parsley, and thyme
- Nuts & Seeds… almonds, pecans, pine nuts, poppy & sesame seeds, walnuts.
- Naughty but nice… butter, caramel (sugar!), cheese, cream, cream cheese (!), milk, sour cream, and yogurt – and the sour cream and yogurt open up another range of dip possibilities
- PLUS… anchovies, bacon (smoked) & gamon, chicken, chorizio, fish (think smoked salmon, maceral, tuna, shrimps), lamb, pancetta, prosciutto.
- ALSO… pasta, lentils, chickpeas, rice, soy sauce, currents & raisins, tobacco sauce, sweet chilli sauce, balsamic vinegar
- Don’t forget the eggs!
