A runner bean that is utterly perfect for a patio pot! Hestia is very dwarf and just as suitable for pots and containers as well an in the veg patch - perhaps at an edge or beside a path for easy pickings. The answer for balcony gardeners and for those with the windiest conditions too.  And there is no cheating with quality at this small size...Hestia produces beautiful red and white flowers followed by slim stringless beans. This is early to crop and can be picked over a long period.

Price for 24 seeds

SOW: in late spring after frost danger has passed.  We like to start runners in pots (seed depth 2.5-5cm) and plant out when they more than one set of leaves after hardening off.   You can also sow in situ. They like rich soil so if you are able to dig in organic matter early in the spring the beans will appreciate the extra boost.

GROW: pot grown Hestia will appreciate a liquid feed to give an extra boost once cropping starts.  They are insect pollinated – the insects prefer shelter from wind.  Depending on the growing conditions cropping will start in about 14 weeks.  They like to be watered at the base in dry weather.

EAT: keep picking and the beans will keep coming.  We like to pick our beans when they are young but stringless varieties will continue to give you nice beans even if you leave them on the plant for longer than intended.  Fresh beans to the plate are a flavour to savour – we have been known to eat a bowl full with a dash of lemon juice!  All Runner Beans freeze very well – slice and bag into meal sized amounts
