First decide where you would like your blanket of flowers then weed and dig the soil thoroughly to a fine tilth.  Mix the seed with about 4g of sharp sand or vermiculite – this will help mix the seeds and show you where you have sown them.  To make it easier to look after your flowers make drills so that your plants will grow in rows (helps with weeding) or simply broadcast over the area.

In shades of blue, turquoise and white, stately in height (to 120cm) with strong stems.  These will add a touch of drama wherever you grow them.  They are the hardiest of Delphiniums, they are also an excellent cut flower: early sowings can flower in their first year

Guinevere – bright lavender-rose satiny flowers with a splash of white at the centre of each bloom.  These will grow into stately beautiful plants for the back of your border. Attractive to bees and butterflies they can also be cut for a display. Flowering June to September, best in full sun, early sowings can flower in their first year. SOW & GROW: early sowings in January or early February can flower in their first year otherwise in March to May.  Use seed trays or pots and lightly cover seeds with compost or vermiculite.  Keep at 15-18°C.  They are quite quick at 2-3 weeks.  Pot up and grow on.  Early sowings can be planted out in the summer otherwise overwinter in a coldframe before planting next year (they will die back in the winter).  They take 2-3 years to reach their full size and so should be spaced 50cm apart.  Protect young plants from slugs and snails.

SOW: during March to April in pots of seed compost.  Germination can be erratic… sow three or four seeds into each pot - you will only need nine plants per square meter.  For best results just cover seeds with compost & seal in a plastic bag and keep at about 18-20°C.  Germination takes 2-3 weeks.

GROW:  harden off and transplant when all danger of frost has passed (late May).  Space plants about 20-25cm apart.  They like a sunny and well drained position.  They may need a few sticks for support.

ENJOY: pick in the morning when some of the cluster has opened, change water daily.  Deadhead to prolong garden blooming
