Stunning variety, every aspect is fabulous from the hibiscus-like flowers to the deep red stems and midribs that provide such a contrast against the green of the leaves. All this is just the backdrop for the burgundy pods that are the real gems here: for the best flavour pick when 10cm long but they stay tender and delicious even at 15cm or more. Price for 12 seeds

This produces lots of tasty salad leaves, at their best when picked young, with a vibrant red to add a splash of colour to summer salads or lightly steam for use hot. It has a lot going for it being very easy to grow and also very attractive. It has been grown as a vegetable since the Roman times, the Italians use it in Pasta and in France and England it is more often used in soups and stews. An alternative use is to grow it as a striking architectural plant as left alone it can reach up to 2.5m tall. Price for 50 seeds
