Atlanta ~ there are two ways to enjoy this variety either pulled when pencil thick and enjoyed as a ‘baby veg’ (just top and tail, cook and serve whole), grown on you will discover Atlanta is an excellent cold hardy winter leek that will be giving you a fresh crop in March/April time next year 

Hannibal ~ tasty, early variety giving you large, thick, medium to long shanks.  This variety harvests July to October

Winter Giant ~ standing tall and proud through the hardest of winters this is the perfect winter leek standing from October to March.  Simply lift as you need them

Look forward to a delicious long white shanks and a high yield from this variety. It is very cold hardy and happy growing for use from December onwards, you can also harvest earlier for baby leeks. Price for 50 seeds

Look forward to the tasty long shanks that can be harvested from December to April.  The strong growing plants have good frost resistance and should it snow the strong blue green leaves will show where your crop is hiding!

Elefant (naturally nurtured seed) has excellently flavoured long thick shanks.  This hardy and reliable variety will over-winter, standing in good condition for up to six months from October.  Earth up for the best results.

Planting holes for leeks

When leeks are ready to plant out you need to make holes…15cm deep.  These holes need to be straight sided and narrow so a dibber is best… if you haven’t got a dibber you need a piece of wood about the same size as a circle made with your thumb and forefinger.  The end needs to be a blunt point then mark on where 15cm is and push into the soil to that mark.

Your hole spacing can vary…

If you plan to earth up the holes need to be 15cm apart in rows that are 30cm apart

If not earthing up then space 15cm apart in each direction

If you are growing in a small space 10cm apart and then harvest alternate plants to create more room for the remaining leeks to grow.

We have been keeping an eye on Exeter F1 in trial plus is had a local name… since then we have moved but the quality of this variety continues to be outstanding.  A lovely long shanked leek for winter harvesting.

SOW: March to May for harvesting between November and February.  Seed depth 1cm.  We sow our leeks in modules or seed trays rather than a seed bed as we find it easier to separate them when transplanting.

GROW: when your young leeks are large enough (about 20cm tall), plant out one leek per 15cm deep hole made with a dibber or stick.  Stand one leek in each hole, then fill the holes repeatedly with water. This ‘puddling in’, settles soil around the roots. There’s no need to backfill the holes. If it is dry after planting water gently every day but otherwise just leave them to grow!

EAT: your leeks can be lifted as and when you need them through the winter

The ideal, and very tasty, variety for an early start to your leek season. This will give you large thick, medium to long white shanks topped with dark green leaves. Price for 50 seeds

This is a vigorous grower and very early cropping – you can harvest from August and if you use it as a mini veg you can pick it even earlier! It has a lovely mild flavour and a well-deserved winner of an AGM. Price for 50 seeds
