Tamina is a lovely deep red, salad-sized heirloom tomato hailing from the old GDR. The flavour has a good balance of sweet and sour, the skins are crack resistant, it’s early to start fruiting and manages the temperature changes UK gardeners are so familiar with! Indeterminate

Sow: about 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost, sowing 5mm deep in modules, then cover or put on a windowsill.  We transplant to small pots when large enough to handle and grow on until ready to harden off and plant after frost danger has passed.

Grow: in a sunny, sheltered spot or a greenhouse. For the best flavour keep soil evenly damp & don’t overfeed. Now Tamina is a tall-growing indeterminate variety. However, you can grow it to be wider and not so tall. Keep two side shoots low down on the stem but pinch out any others higher up the plant. The plant puts its energy into the three stems, blooming, setting and ripening fruits rather than growing ever upwards. Support these stems and pick lots of tasty toms.

Enjoy: there is nothing quite like sun-warmed tomatoes straight from the plant. And even if it’s not a sun-drenched summer, Tamina can still thrive and give you plenty to enjoy.
