With Purple Calabash expect deeply fluted fruits, pick whilst still pinkish or let them ripen to deep burgundy/purple. This amazing heirloom has a rich, almost wine-like flavour with a citrus tang that will shine when used for wedges in salads, chopped into salsas or for sauces. Big but not huge fruits, less than 400g, some describe these as ugly fruits but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Drought tolerant, crack resistant and stores well too. Indeterminate
This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source
Undoubtedly an heirloom, Purple Calabash Tomato dates to pre-Columbian Mexico. It was even grown by the 3rd American president, Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), author of the Declaration of Independence
SOW: about 6-8 weeks before the last frost is expected, pop 2 or 3 seeds in each small pot and lightly cover. Pot on when large enough to handle, planting them deeply (tomatoes grow roots from the buried stem) and grow on. Harden off and plant out when frost danger is over.
GROW: happiest with protection or in a warm sheltered spot outside. For the best flavour keep soil evenly damp (try not to over-water or overfeed). Purple Calabash is indeterminate, growing & fruiting ‘til frosts.
ENJOY: for wedges in salads, chopped into salsas or for sauces where the rich, almost wine-like flavour with a citrus tang will shine. The big but not huge fruits, less than 400g, can store well
