Greenshaft is a super variety, an AGM winner that has been a favourite for the last 50+ years. British bred means that you can look forward to a high yield of very sweet peas. This maincrop variety grows to 75cm tall with pods high on the plant making them easy to pick.
To be an AGM winner means that this variety has been outstanding in trials: reliable and with great garden performance
SOW: from March to June, in a mild area a sowing in July can extend your harvest into October. Maincrop peas such as Greenshaft take about 14 weeks from sowing to harvest. We start all our peas in pots. Sowing in guttering to be slid into place has become popular. They can be sown in situ but wait until the soil has stated to warm up.
GROW: pot sown plants need to be hardened off before planting out. Peas like moisture and will tolerate light shade. Provide support such as short canes and string or twiggy sticks. Water in dry summers, increasing the amount a little once they have started to flower. Pick regularly to encourage more growth.
ENJOY: it remains rare for our peas to get as far kitchen – shelled and eaten as they are picked, especially the sweet Greenshaft!
