October’s Cool Season Salad Collection

Just because the sun isn’t so warm and the days aren’t as long, why give up on salad? Turn your back on those expensive supermarket choices for a little longer and keep that homegrown feeling going.

Because it’s not just about the flavour. There’s something rather satisfying about finding a bit of ‘I grew that’ tucked into your lunch box or sitting on your plate!

And at this time of year, you don’t need masses of space. There might be room on a windowsill, space in the growhouse now the tomatoes are winding down, a gap in the greenhouse, a spare cloche or two or an empty spot in the veggie bed.

A little bit of space and some seeds are all you need. You find the space and we’ve sorted out the seeds!

Beetroot Lutz: a great choice for salads, roasting or braising, and you can eat the leaves too. Start these outside, using a cloche in more exposed gardens to help them get going. Mulch around the plants and any exposed roots as the weather gets colder and you’ll have one of our top choices for winter beetroot. (50 seeds).

Corn Salad Verte de Cambrai: a traditional French variety with small, mild leaves that happily mingle with other flavours rather than taking centre stage. Give it a gap in the greenhouse or some space under a cloche and keep fresh leaves coming as the season changes. (50 seeds).

Endive Panaclieri: give this versatile veggie the shelter of a cloche and grow it as a cut-and-come-again crop. Most often eaten raw in salads, those leaves can head into the kitchen too as the weather cools. Try them braised for something a little different. (40 seeds).

Parsley French Plain Leaf: a bit of space in the growhouse or room on a windowsill can give you fresh leaves through winter and into early spring. Perfect for adding extra flavour to your cooking or tucking into sandwiches. (100 seeds).

Rocket Voyager: make room on a windowsill and sow a pinch in a pot. You can start picking as soon as there are enough leaves to spare a few! Pick them young for a slightly milder flavour or leave them to grow a little larger for more of that rocket kick. (50 seeds).

Five packets and plenty of ways to keep something fresh and homegrown on the menu for a little while longer.
