Popular Flakkee is a solid, no-fuss variety that’s earned its reputation. It handles poorer soils well, rarely splits, and has a long cropping period—plus it stores for ages. The large, bright orange roots are juicy and full of flavour.
Pull them as soon as you can’t wait any longer, or leave them in the ground until autumn—they’ll be just as good.
This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source
SOW: depth 10mm, from March to June, for a succession of these lovely carrots sow a little every 3 weeks. You can also do early sowings from February using cloches to warm the soil and protect your seedlings. Remember to dig the soil thoroughly. Sow sparingly to avoid the need for too much thinning.
GROW: keep moist and weed free – they don’t like the competition. If you do need to this then do it in the evening and clear up all the bits, watering first can make it easier.
EAT & ENJOY: pull as soon as you cannot resist any longer or leave them till the autumn. Flakkee can reach over 20cm long in the best conditions (they will even thrive in poor soil). They don’t often split and will store for ages, or you can freeze them.
