Lovely Detroit Globe was first introduced in the 1890s. This variety has smooth-skinned roots that cook up to a bright purple-red. It won’t give you a uniform crop but never mind, the flavour is what you’re really after. It’s a great choice for autumn harvests and stores well, though you can also pick the roots young in summer for sweet salad beets. The short leafy tops are edible too and make a tasty extra crop.
This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source
SOW & GROW: traditionally sown as a main crop in the open from mid-March to August. Seed depth 20mm. Make several sowings for a continuous supply. August sowings may need protection later. Detroit Globe can be sown during the rest of the year in protected containers. Instead of thinning pull some for use when young & leave the rest to grow on. Keep weed free and try not to let the soil dry out. Ready to harvest after 9-12 weeks. Not the most uniform variety but it’s the flavour that counts!
ENJOY: bright purple-red once cooked. It is a perfect choice for autumn beets as they store well. Harvest young in the summer for sweet salad beets. The short leafy top growth also makes a tasty crop – no waste!
