Kabocha Large Green F1 weighs in around the 2kg mark about twice the weight of a standard Kabocha: not so large as be classed as a monster and more than manageable for enjoying remembering that Kabocha has an exceptionally sweet flavour, even sweeter than butternut squash, so plenty of gorgeousness in store. Talking of storage these are one of the best winter storage squashes for enjoying through into the early spring. Simmer, steam, mash or roast halves or slices for fab meals. You can slowly bake Kabocha whole and uncut in a convection oven, after which the entire squash becomes soft and edible, including the rind. Price for 3 seeds
SOW: end of March to end of May, start 1 seed per pot or module at about 2-2.5cm deep on their sides. Keep moist but not waterlogged & when they have 5 or 6 leaves start to harden off after all danger of frost has passed then plant out.
GROW: plant in the garden or 1 plant per 45cm pot or two per growbag. Water the soil, not the leaves, & feed every two weeks: container grown plants are most at risk of drying out and will need more carful tending. From mid-august pinch out the growing tips (and keep doing this) to concentrate growth to the fruit. Pick fruit before frosts arrive leaving at least 10cm of stalk. Cure your squash to dry and harden the skins before storing.
EAT: simmer, steam, mash, roast or bake whole. These Kabocha can store right through the winter in a frost free place.
AGM WINNER – Kabocha Large Green F1 is recognised by the RHS for its great growing qualities (reliable, good crop) and also for attracting bees and other beneficial insects with its nectar rich flowers.
