Majestic Hollyhock Chater’s Double Mixed produces tall, strong stems lined with large, fully double flowers in shades from white and yellow through to pink, red, and purple. The ruffled blooms open gradually from the base of the stem upwards, giving a long-lasting and impressive display. Perfect for the back of borders or planted against a wall or fence, these classic cottage garden favourites are also loved by bees and butterflies. Early sowings may flower in the first year.

🌸 Flowering: June to September (from second year)

🌿Perennial

SOW
If you’ve got a greenhouse or can give a bit of gentle heat, you can start seeds as early as January or February in trays of seed compost. Cover lightly with compost or perlite/vermiculite and keep them warm — around 18–20°C.

Otherwise, sow later in June or July, either thinly in a seed bed or in individual pots in a cold frame. Germination usually takes 2–3 weeks. Prick out or pot up the strongest seedlings as they grow and keep them ticking along.

GROW
Early sowings can be planted out in May, once the frost risk has passed. These might even flower in their first year. Later sowings should be transplanted in September or October to give them time to settle in before winter.

Space plants about 50–60cm apart in a sunny, sheltered spot. These tall beauties might need a bit of staking as they grow. Later sowings won’t flower in the first year, but the following summer they’ll put on a real show.

ENJOY
Flower spikes can be cut for the vase — either sear the stems or invert them, fill with tepid water, and hold it in with your finger as you place them into a pre-filled vase. Cut plants back after flowering to encourage strong growth next season. A real statement plant that brings height, vibrant colour, and pollinator appeal to any garden.
