Cape Gooseberry (also known as Physalis) is an easy-to-grow plant that adds something a little different to the garden. It flowers in July and August, then produces bright orange fruits tucked inside papery husks—just like the ones often used to finish restaurant desserts.
The fruits are tangy, sweet, and delicious—perfect for snacking or adding to puddings and pies. Grows well in a sheltered spot or greenhouse, and well worth a try for something a bit special.
SOW: start seeds indoors in early to mid-spring. Sow onto moist, well-draining seed compost and cover very lightly—just a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite is enough. Pot on when large enough to handle and keep them warm while they grow.
GROW: once all risk of frost has passed, plant out into a greenhouse or a sheltered, sunny spot in the garden. Plants can grow quite tall, so may need staking. Water regularly—about once a week. Flowering begins in July and August, followed by bright orange fruits inside papery husks. They’re usually ready from September until the first frosts. A dry, papery husk and firm fruit are good signs they’re ripe.
ENJOY:
- To store, leave the fruit in their husks and hang in a mesh bag in a cool, dry place.
- To eat, peel off the husk, rinse off the sticky coating, and enjoy fresh—or add to desserts, sauces, jams or sweet pies.
