Turnip Sweetbell F1 is exceptionally sweet, firm and crisp – another lovely variety to tempt you to add turnip to your salad; this is indeed a salad turnip that can be pulled from just 4cm in diameter or left to grow on to 6-8cm. This variety grows with purple shoulders and pure white flesh. Slice or grate for salads, steam, stir-fry or bake as a hot veg, don’t forget the edible leaves!
Sow: for salad use sow these from March to July in situ at 10mm deep: sow sparingly to minimise need to thin seedlings. For a succession of salad turnips make several sowings 2-3 weeks apart
Grow: thin seedlings so roots have space to develop – thinnings can be eaten as greens. Water regularly in dry weather. Produces turnips with purple shoulders and pure white flesh. Harvest at 6–8cm in diameter, or smaller for extra tenderness.
Enjoy: slice or grate for salads, steam, stir-fry or bake as a hot veg. Don’t forget the edible leaves which are hairless and delicious raw in mixed salads.
