Saint Pierre is renowned for its large juicy fruits - sliced fresh and add to burgers or sandwiches. The largest fruits are particularly delicious cooked in soups and sauces. Their versatility continues as they retain their shape when cooked, which makes them perfect for stuffing and grilling or baking in the oven. This variety is an heirloom that has remained popular amongst gardeners for over a century.
SOW: in spring 5-7 weeks before you plan to plant out, 1.5mm deep in good seed compost, germination takes 7-14 days at 18-24°C Transplant, when large enough, to small pots and grow on in cooler well-lit conditions.
GROW: plant in the greenhouse or a sunny sheltered part of your garden. For the best flavour keep soil evenly damp & don’t overfeed. Saint Pierre, is indeterminate, growing tall and needing support – best to grow as a single stem & take out sideshoots

So what is an heirloom? All heirloom varieties are open-pollinated but not all open-pollinated varieties are heirloom: they also need to have been grown for at least the last 50 years, being passed down through generations because they have particularly good qualities.
