Oh my. These are something different again. Indigo Pear Drops are the most perfect petite pear-shaped tomatoes with striking deep indigo shoulders that ripen to a rich golden yellow. That colour is best on the sunny side of these fruits! And they are prolific. You may see claims of up to 1000 fruits per plant, but don’t expect that in the UK! Here you will have plenty but as they are small you will need lots for a portion! Oh and the flavour of course, sweet and mild with a touch of acidic tang.
Sow: about 6-8 weeks before the last frost is expected, sowing 5mm deep in modules. Cover or put on a windowsill. We transplant to pots when large enough to handle and grow on until ready to harden off and plant after frost danger has passed.
Grow: plant in the greenhouse or in a sunny, sheltered part of your garden. For the best flavour keep soil evenly damp and try not to over-water or overfeed. Indigo Pear Drops is indeterminate: growing, blooming, setting and ripening fruit throughout the season. Only pinch out the side shoots if you prefer to do so.
Enjoy: these are almost too pretty to cut up, so don't! Scatter them whole through a salad, pile them into a bowl for sharing or use them wherever you want those little golden and indigo pear drops to be noticed. Of course, there's nothing stopping you eating a few while you're picking them too.
💡 Did you know?
That extraordinary indigo colouring comes from anthocyanins, natural pigments that develop in the skin where the fruits are exposed to sunlight. That's why you'll see the deepest colour on the sunny side of your Indigo Pear Drops.
