Grow the famous Brandywine Pink and experience something very special. The intense aroma and exceptional flavour are what make this variety so well loved. These are perfect meaty toms for slicing, ideal for sandwiches or layering in a burger, grilled for breakfast, and they also work beautifully in soups and sauces. The fruits ripen to a pinkish red and can reach up to 700 g, though most will be about half that size and full of that unmistakable heirloom flavour.
The history of Brandywine tomatoes is a bit of an enigma. What is known is that the seeds were submitted to a seed saving group in the 1980s, with an oral history tracing back to the late 1800s. Since then they have only grown in popularity, and now you have the chance to grow and enjoy them for yourself.
SOW: we start ours about 6-8 weeks before the last frost is expected sowing in modules, seed depth 5mm (cover or put on a windowsill). Transplant to pots when large enough to handle, grow on until ready to harden off & plant after frost danger is over. (about mid-May/June).
GROW: we find Brandywine Pink does best sheltered from summer rain – tucked under an overhang or in a grow-house or greenhouse. Brandywine is indeterminate, it will grow tall & need firm supports (the fruit is heavy). It will bloom, set new fruit, and ripen fruit all at the same time
ENJOY: fruits will be different sizes & shapes, ripen to pinky-red, full of fabulous flavour
