Sweet Pea Flagship is a beautifully scented deep blue Spencer type — rich in colour and strong in fragrance. It’s widely considered the best-scented sweet pea in this shade and makes a striking display on its own or paired with paler or picotee varieties.
🌸 Flowering: June to August
📏 Height: to 180cm
🌿Annual
SOW
Sow in deep pots from October to February and overwinter in a cold frame, or sow in March or April. In mild areas, you can also direct sow in spring. Sow seeds 12–20mm deep. Some gardeners soak seeds overnight before sowing to help with germination — not essential, but worth a try.
GROW
Pinch out the tops when seedlings reach about 5cm to encourage stronger side shoots. Harden off spring-sown plants before planting out in May or June. Overwintered plants often flower earlier. Give them something to climb — wigwams, netting or hazel twigs all work well. Sweet peas are generous with blooms if you keep picking, so don’t hold back.
ENJOY:
Stunning planted solo for impact, or combine with cream and white-flowered varieties for a classic, romantic mix. Add a splash of red for a fragrant, patriotic display.
TOP TIP
To keep your sweet peas flowering for as long as possible, water regularly and feed with a high potash plant food (tomato fertiliser works well). Keep picking or deadheading spent blooms — if seed pods are allowed to form, the plant will think its job is done and flowering will slow right down.
