Incredible F1 really lives up to its name. It’s a real gourmet’s delight, with sweet, tender kernels. For gardeners, this is a variety that can cope with wetter summer weather or baking sun. Happy plants can reach a statuesque 2.4 metres tall (that’s 8 feet). And before you worry about managing an incredible crop, this sugar-enhanced type means those sweet cobs are slow to turn starchy on the plant. They also freeze well. Simply incredible in every way.
SOW: inside from late March to early May, or in May-June outside. Warm, moist (not wet) soil is a must, seed depth 2cm in deep pots or cardboard tubes.
GROW: harden off after frost danger is over. Plant them in a block, spacing plants and rows about 30-50 cm apart. This variety is resistant to rust. Sweetcorn is wind pollinated, so you can help things along by dusting with the top tassels (male flowers) over the silks (female flowers). You may need to stake this tall variety if your plot catches the wind. Underplanting with leafy vegetables helps keep the roots moist; rambling pumpkins are ideal, and we like to plant dwarf beans around the edges too.
ENJOY: ready to harvest when the juice from a kernel is ‘milky’. Simply pop into a pan of boiling water – fabulous – or BBQ by steaming it in the husk before peeling and slathering in butter (at least, that’s what we do). These stay sweet on the plant for longer giving you more time to pick, eat or freeze them.
