Delicious Tuffy Sweet is one of the most beautiful heirloom acorn squashes you can grow. The fruits are deeply ribbed, about a kilo each, and the plants will usually reward you with 5–6 of them apiece. The flesh has a thicker, drier texture and a natural sweetness that makes it perfect for baking. Just cut in half, drizzle with oil and scatter with herbs, or add a knob of butter and a sprinkle of sugar before roasting at 180°C for about 45 minutes – it turns into a caramelised treat! These are trailing plants that will happily scramble along the ground or be tied up onto a frame if you’re short of space.

SOW: from late April to the end of May, start 1 seed per pot or module. Keep moist but not waterlogged.
GROW: harden off and plant out after all danger of frost has passed. In cooler areas you can protect young plants with cloches until they have settled in. After harvesting in late summer leave them outdoors for about 14 days to harden the skin for storing (protect from frost) or ripen in a greenhouse.
ENJOY: delicious flavour when baked or roasted.  The shells can be used as hold the roasted flesh for serving.  Scatter with herbs, add a stuffing for a more savoury experience.  Cook with butter and a sprinkle of sugar to enhance the natural sweetness. Storage from harvest will also quickly see the natural sugars developing, you will notice this flavour change from as little as two weeks from harvesting.
