These beautiful yellow scallop edged Sunbeam F1 fruits could be coming into your kitchen from mid-July. The plants are vigorous and the fruits are tasty and plentiful. We think they are best when picked at about 7cm in diameter although they can grow to twice that size. These are known as patty pan summer squashes.
SOW: from late April to the end of May, under cover to start them off, 1 per pot.
GROW: keep moist but not waterlogged. Once they have a couple of proper leaves harden off and after 2 more weeks (or early June) plant out when all danger of frost has passed. In cooler areas you can protect young plants with cloches until they have settled in. Grow and treat these as you would a courgette. From planting out in early June Sunbeam can have fruit ready early in July: We think they are best when picked at about 7cm in diameter although they can grow to twice that size
EAT & ENJOY: tasty fried or grilled – fab with tomato dishes and grilled peppers.
