Hunter F1 has a lovely sweet taste. The bright orange flesh is covered by an unassuming tan colour skin. This is one of the first butternut squashes to be bred for the UK climate and remains an outstanding choice. It is mature and ready to harvest after about 15 weeks.
Sow: from late April to the end of May, under cover to start them off, 1 per pot, 20-25mm deep. Keep moist - not waterlogged.
Grow: harden off and plant out after all danger of frost has passed. In cooler areas you can protect young plants with cloches until they have settled in. Hunter is mature and ready to harvest after about 15 weeks. After harvest leave them outdoors for about 14 days to harden the skin for storing (protect from frost) or ripen in a greenhouse.
Enjoy: bake, roast or stir fry, use in soups or sweet pies.
