Lovely Black Futsu is a heavily ribbed, small, black skinned round shaped squash! A choice and rare variety originating from Japan, it has an excellent sugary-nutty flavour when roasted reminiscent of hazelnuts. The flesh is golden coloured while the skin will turn chestnut colour in storage.

SOW: between late April to end of May, start 1 seed per pot or module, 20-25mm deep
GROW: keep moist but not waterlogged. Harden off and plant out after all danger of frost has passed. In cooler areas you can protect young plants with cloches until they have settled in. After harvesting in late summer leave them outdoors for 14 days to harden the skin for storing (protect from frost) or ripen in a greenhouse.
ENJOY: an excellent sugary-nutty flavour when roasted reminiscent of hazelnuts. Bake, roast or stir fry, use in soups or sweet pies. This variety can be stored: the skin will turn chestnut colour in storage.
