Winter Hardy White Lisbon has the same great taste as White Lisbon but, as the name suggests, this selection has particular winter hardiness. Sow in late summer and autumn, overwinter the young plants and you'll have spring onions ready to enjoy when there isn't an awful lot else being freshly harvested from the garden.
Sow: from late August through September and October. Sow sparingly to minimise thinning, no deeper than 1cm, in an open site.
Grow: in cooler parts of the UK you may need cloches while the young plants get going, but once established they are very hardy. Harvest from March onwards. If you're likely to get snow in early spring, do mark their location so you can find them!
Enjoy: pull as needed for fresh spring onions in March and April. At this time of year we tend to use them in stir-fries or braise them whole, as it's still a bit chilly for lots of salad!
