White Lisbon is the classic spring onion, with long white stems and bright green leaves. Delicious and mild when young, it grows quickly to give you that familiar spring onion flavour and crunch. An AGM winner recognised for its excellent garden performance, it's also our most popular individual spring onion variety.
Sow: from February to July. For an early start, sow 4–5 seeds into a module, lightly cover and grow on under cover before hardening off and planting outside. Alternatively, sow thinly in the open from spring, about 10–15mm deep. Make further sowings every few weeks for a succession of spring onions throughout the summer.
Grow: plant module-grown onions out as a small cluster, or simply leave direct-sown seedlings to grow and pull as needed. You can start harvesting young and tender, with mature spring onions ready from around 12 weeks after sowing.
Enjoy: White Lisbon is just what you want from a traditional spring onion. Slice those crisp white stems and green tops into salads and sandwiches, scatter them over finished dishes or add them to your cooking. Surplus can also be cut into strips and frozen for adding straight to stir-fries.
