Tipika is a lovely, vigorous variety that produces plenty of beautifully uniform onions beneath its very upright, dark green leaves. Harvest the young onions as they begin to bulb, or leave them longer to develop the almost spherical, pure white bulbs that give this Continental-style bunching onion its distinctive look. We find the younger onions have a mild flavour, developing more of a delicious tang as they grow. Particularly tolerant of colder conditions, Tipika is suitable for both spring and autumn sowing.
Sow: in spring and autumn in the open, no more than 1cm deep. Sow sparingly to minimise thinning and make further sowings every 2–3 weeks if you'd like a succession of young salad onions. Later sowings can be protected with cloches as the weather turns colder.
Grow: Tipika's good cold tolerance makes it a particularly useful choice for exposed or cooler gardens and for summer growing further north. Pull as the bulbs begin to swell, or leave them in the ground longer to develop their distinctive, almost spherical white bulbs.
Enjoy: the younger onions are mild and lovely sliced into salads and sandwiches. Leave them to grow on and you'll have those lovely round white bulbs for stir-fries and other cooked dishes.
