Vigorous, British-bred Marksman stands out in the garden and the kitchen. Its upright growth, strong root system and non-bulbing habit are combined with a lovely mild flavour. The straight, slim stems peel particularly easily too, making preparation quick before you slice or dice them into salads or use them in cooking. Disease resistant and particularly good at keeping those upright leaves growing strongly as the weather changes, Marksman is an excellent choice for later sowings and autumn crops.
Sow: in situ from March to August, no deeper than 1cm. September sowings will need protection from cloches as the weather changes. Sow sparingly to minimise thinning and make further sowings every 3–4 weeks for a succession of salad onions.
Grow: keep weed-free and water regularly during very hot, dry weather. Pull as needed. Marksman's vigorous root system helps it keep growing strongly into autumn, when disease and changing weather can become more of a problem.
Enjoy: simply peel away the outer leaf to reveal the clean, slim white shank, ready to slice into salads or add to cooked dishes. Its milder flavour makes it particularly good eaten raw. You can also dice and freeze your surplus, ready to add straight to a stir-fry during winter.
