Lovely Lilia has rich red stems topped by fresh green leaves, a dramatic and tasty AGM winner recognised for its excellent garden performance. With Lilia you can enjoy two onions for the price of one! Grow it as a colourful spring onion, leave it to develop into a full-sized bulb, or divide your seeds and grow some of each.
Sow: thinly, about 1cm deep, to minimise the need for thinning. Use cloches to protect early sowings until around mid-April.
For spring onions: sow at intervals of about 3 weeks from February to July for a succession of colourful onions, ready to start pulling after around 10 weeks.
For maincrop onions: sow from March to May, allowing plenty of time for the bulbs to develop. These should be ready to harvest from August.
Enjoy: pull young for crisp red spring onions with a fresh, mild flavour, or let them grow on and use the mature bulbs as you would other red onions. Growing some each way gives you two quite different harvests from the same packet.
