Santa Cruz F1 has delicious rounded leaves and tender stems, making it a versatile choice. A little slower growing than some, it is very bolt resistant and has good mildew resistance too. That makes Santa Cruz particularly useful through warmer weather, including those hot spells when regular watering can create warm, damp conditions around the plants.
Sow: from April to the end of August, 10–15mm deep. Sow 2–3 seeds per pot or module for transplanting, or sow in situ.
Grow: for salad leaves, grow closely together, leaving a wider spacing if you want larger plants. Space transplants 15–20cm apart, planting each pot of seedlings as an intact bunch. This leaves the roots undisturbed while giving each bunch room to grow.
Eat & Enjoy: enjoy the leaves in salads or cooked; steaming is a good way to retain their nutritional value. The tender stems are delicious too, so there's no need to discard them.
