The wonderful Watermelon radish's deep green shoulders on white skin combined with pinky-red flesh make this visually beautiful... but that would be no good without a delicious flavour. And this one won't disappoint: crispy with a mild and sweet flavour make it an excellent choice for salads, garnishes and cooking (its very good in a stir fry). This variety, best grown in the cool of spring and autumn, is sometimes known as the Roseheart Radish - simply slice through to see its heart for yourself.
SOW: from June to August, in situ in a 1cm deep drill and aiming for 2-3cm spacing. To spread out your harvest sow some seed every week or two. Protected sowing possible Sept - April
GROW: they like to be moist but not waterlogged. You may need to thin them to give them space but the leaves of the thinnings can be added to salads so they will not be wasted. Remember, these are quick and will be ready in 4-6 weeks through the year from staggered sowings.
ENJOY: an excellent choice for salads, garnishes and for cooking (very good in a stir fry), both decorative and tasty
