Phlox Grandiflora Tall Mixed is a charming addition to the garden with shades from striking raspberry to subtle, dusky pink, alongside white flowers and blooms with yellow or deep berry eyes. All this and a lovely, light, sweet fragrance. They are quick off the mark from seed and you’ll soon see oodles of flowers that are brilliant for cutting. Sow: from February, sow indoors 2mm deep into moist well-drained seed compost. Keep at 18-20C. Germination takes 10-21 days. When large enough to handle, pot on. Pinch out the growing tips when the plant is about 8cm tall to encourage it to branch out and produce stronger, longer stems. They can also be direct sown from April to May.
Grow: plant out after the risk of frost has passed, 20-25cm apart. They prefer to be in full sun in well-drained soil. Adding some compost before planting will give them a boost. Cutting flowers or deadheading spent flower clusters will encourage them to bloom again.
