Lovely Lusaka is a British bred sugar snap that you could be picking from June to September: it is delicious and sweet, and compact so you could grow them in patio containers. We have been really pleased with Lusaka that’s a long time for a pea, and , well worth trying for yourself.
SOW: from March to June. We start ours 3 seeds to a pot to give them a fighting chance against the mice. Sowing in guttering to be slid into place has become popular. Lusaka can be sown and grown direct into the soil or into patio containers.
GROW: pot grown plants need to be hardened off before planting out. Peas like moisture and will tolerate light shade. They need watering in dry summers. Pick regularly to encourage more growth. Lusaka is compact but in a windy site will be happier with canes or netting to support it (height 75-100cm).
EAT & ENJOY: pick when the pods are plump and easily snapped in half (about 6-8cm long) for use sliced raw or lightly cooked. You can use smaller young pods whole. This variety is resistant to powdery mildew so can keep cropping into September.
