Pea First Early May is lovely in every way. It can be sown in the spring, whille an autumn sowing will give you sweet fresh peas from late May. This is a taller variety, reaching aound 140cm (about four feet six), and it will need supporting with a mesh. You can look forward to plump pods filled with eight sweet flavoured peas in each.
This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source
SOW: sow from March to June. This is a hardy, round seeded variety and can be autumn sown for harvesting from late May. We start our peas in pots, 30-50mm seed depth and 3 or 4 seeds per pot. They can be sown in situas well. For early sowings, warm the soil with cloches to give them that little bit of protection as they get going.
GROW: pot grown plants need to be hardened off before planting out at about 12cm apart. No need to tease apart, just plant as a small clump. First Early May will need a mesh or net to support the taller growth. They will tolerate light shade. Water in dry summers, not too much while they are young but a little more once they start to flower. Pick regularly to encourage more pods.
ENJOY: a spring or summer sowing will be ready in 11-14 weeks Autumn sowing plants should crop in May or early June. Harvest when the pods are plump.
