Papaver ‘Black Peony’ is stunning and spectacular, this paeoniflorum-type poppy shows off large, fully double blooms that look like crumpled silk. The flowers range from deep red to a dark purple-maroon, almost black. It grows tall—adding dramatic height and colour to borders.

SOW: sow in prepared ground where you want the flowers to grow, from April to May (or March if you’re in a very mild area). Just cover the seeds lightly. Germination usually takes about 3 weeks.
You can also sow in August or September to overwinter and get flowers the following late spring.
GROW: thin seedlings so they have enough space to grow, then enjoy mid-summer blooms from spring sowings, or late spring flowers from autumn sowings.

For longer-lasting blooms, cut the flower while still in bud and quickly sear the stem ends with a match before placing in water.
