Texas Giant is a flavourful heirloom variety dating back to 1944. It is lovely in salads (not too pungent, not exactly sweet) and also good for cooking. A reliable producer of large onions with the right conditions! Well drained fertile soil in full sun with regular watering are what makes it happy. Transplanting also seems to encourage this variety to do its best.
SOW & GROW: these are best started in trays or modules as transplanting seems to trigger better growth and larger onions! Seed depth 5-10mm and sow about 8 weeks before the last expected frost in your area, planting out about 2 weeks after your last frost when your onion seedlings are 10-15cm tall. Choose a very sunny, well drained and fertile place – you can enrich the soil with lots of compost before planting. Space your plants 25-30cm apart. Shallow rooted they will benefit from ample amounts of water to form proper bulbs (about 2-3cm per week). A very happy Texas onion can weight up to 500g
ENJOY: lovely in salads and also for cooking, use fresh or medium storage or freeze.
