The elongated bulbs of Long Red Florence are a deep red-purple colour and have a mild sweet flavour. This Italian heirloom variety is gorgeous in both looks and taste. They can be used young as a spring onion or left to mature for harvesting from August onwards.
SOW: in spring, sparingly 1cm deep in rows about 30cm apart; in situ but warm the soil first under cloches as cold soil upsets germination, thin when large enough to handle. We have successfully started ours in modules and transplanted.
GROW: space at 7-10cm apart for medium bulbs or wider for larger bulbs. Keep well-watered as the bulb swells. Harvest when they reach the size you want! Crop as a spring onion otherwise gather Long Red Florence during August and enjoy the elongated deep red-purple mature bulbs.
ENJOY: there are so many uses for onions and there are also many ways to store them – and they freeze well too.
