It’s also versatile, suitable for both spring and autumn sowing. A classic, reliable onion that earns its space in the garden and will see you through countless kitchen jobs, one well worth growing.
SOW: under cloches February to March, in the open during March & April, sparingly 1cm deep in rows aiming for 10cm spacing. Keep the rows wide enough to hoe weeds. Density also be open sown in Oct-Nov in mild areas. In the spring these can be sown in pots or modules for transplanting.
GROW: transplant 10cm apart. The roots must fall vertically in the planting hole, and the bulb base should be about 1cm below the surface. Plant firmly. When the bulbs start to fatten up, you can begin harvesting individual onions as needed. In Aug/Sept the tops will start to fall over, plan to lift your crop about two weeks after this starts happening. Dry onions before storing.
ENJOY: use any imperfect onions first (any spotted, with soft areas or thick necked). After drying for a couple of weeks, the best ones can store through to March ready for any recipe needing fresh onions!
