Borettana produces beautiful small button onions, this is an heirloom variety from Italy that is also known as Cipollini. They are fabulous for grilling, baking whole or braising in a sweet & sour sauce.
SOW: in late winter/early spring, sparingly 1cm deep; in situ but warm the soil first under cloches as cold soil upsets germination. They can also be started in modules and transplanted.
GROW: space at 5cm apart for small button onions or 10cm apart for a larger bulb. Keep well-watered as the bulb swells. Harvest when they reach the size you want, typically from late June onwards.
ENJOY: these onions have a distinct sweeter taste and can be used in salads, grilled or pickled. Try braising them whole in balsamic vinegar and a sprinkling of sugar until caramelised and serve as a side dish with meat.
