Melon Ogen is a favourite with a rich and sweet flavour, aromatic too. The small fruits start green then turn to golden yellow as they ripen, the distinctive stripes remain green, when ripe they release a sweet, almost tropical aroma, and the blossom end will yield slightly to pressure. RHS AGM winner.
To be an AGM winner means that this variety has been outstanding in trials: it is a reliable garden performer.
SOW: in February to May, one seed per pot, water, and keep warm 18-24°C until germinated. Grow on in a warm spot, pot on as needed, until they have 4 proper leaves. Pinch out after 5 leaves and plant them with protection after all frost danger is over.
GROWING: in the UK melon Ogen really does prefer the extra warmth and protection of a glasshouse, polytunnel or conservatory. In a milder garden consider a good sized cloche or coldframe. Plants can spread 1.5-2m although they take up less space when trained on a frame. They like a rich and moist soil. Hand pollinate by placing a male flower inside a female bloom (female flowers have a swollen part at the base of the bloom). Happy plants can produce 3-4 melons. And the flavour is definitely worth the extra TLC needed for growing.
