Sweet, juicy, fragrant and tasty plus perfect for British summers: Melon Emir is a Charentais type that is tolerant of cooler weather and in the sunniest of corners it will grow outside or tuck into an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel. The gorgeous orange flesh is hidden under a heavily netted skin.
SOW & GROW: in spring, one seed per pot, water, cover with polythene and keep at about 24°C until germinated. Uncover and grow on in a warm spot (16°C) until they have 4 proper leaves. Emir will grow outside in the UK, use black plastic around the plants to help absorb the sun’s warmth but make sure they can get plenty of water. Or plant in an unheated greenhouse, polytunnel or grow bag in a conservatory: Both the plants and individual fruits will need supporting as they grow.
ENJOY: pick the fruits as they ripen (August to October), the fruit gradually becomes more fragrant but judging ripeness is something you have to learn: for this variety do not wait until you can pull the melon off the plant as it will be over-ripe!
