Malope trifida 'Vulcan''s large, trumpet-shaped flowers in rich magenta-pink, each with a bright green star at the centre, make this an easy-to-grow stunner. The silky blooms appear over many weeks, are edible, great for pollinators, and last well when cut — making them as useful as they are beautiful.
🌸 Flowering: June to October
📏 Height: 75-90cm
🌿Annual
SOW: direct sow in April or May, or get a head start by sowing in modules in February or March. Just lightly cover the seeds – about 1mm deep is enough. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, pot them up.
GROW: they like full sun and don’t need much fuss. Harden off and plant out once the risk of frost has passed, spacing them about 30cm apart. When they start flowering, give it a couple of weeks, then start picking – regular harvesting will keep the blooms coming right through to October.
ENJOY: the flowers are EDIBLE, so scatter a few on salads or desserts. As a CUT FLOWER, they’ll last around 10 days in a vase, and bees and other POLLINATORS will appreciate any you leave to enjoy in the garden.
